Shortcuts & formulas

  • Read the axis, units and legend first: many errors come from ignoring 'in thousands' or 'in Rs lakh'.
  • Percentage change = (New - Old) / Old x 100. The base is always the OLD (or reference) value.
  • Average = Total / number of bars. Add the bars first, divide last.
  • 'A is what % of B' = A / B x 100; 'A is what % more than B' = (A - B) / B x 100.
  • Profit % = (Income - Expenditure) / Expenditure x 100.
  • Ratios: write both values, then divide by the common factor.
  • To compare growth rates, compare percentage increases, not absolute increases.
