Shortcuts & formulas

  • Find the opening sentence first: it introduces the topic or person and does not depend on a pronoun (he, she, it, this, they) or a connector (however, thus).
  • Pronouns refer back: a sentence starting with 'He', 'This' or 'These' must come after the sentence that names the person or idea.
  • Connectors fix the order: 'However', 'Yet', 'But' follow a statement they contrast; 'Therefore', 'Thus', 'As a result' come after the cause.
  • Look for time markers: first, then, after that, finally, eventually, today.
  • Find mandatory pairs (two sentences that must be adjacent), then eliminate options that break them.
  • The concluding sentence usually summarises, gives a moral, or states a recommendation.
  • Read the final order once to check that the paragraph flows from general to specific or from cause to effect.
