Shortcuts & formulas

  • Write the positions (floors, days, boxes) as a numbered column or row first and fill names as clues fix them.
  • 'Exactly k between X and Y' means the positions differ by k + 1.
  • In a grid puzzle, make a table of persons against each attribute; tick the confirmed match and cross out the rest of its row and column.
  • Start with direct clues (a person on a named floor/day, topmost, bottom), then use 'immediately above/below' pairs as blocks that slide as one unit.
  • Negative clues ('does not live on floor 3') only help later: use them to eliminate once other clues have narrowed the options.
  • Check the final arrangement against every clue before answering.
