Shortcuts & formulas

  • Assume the statements are true even if they contradict common knowledge; judge conclusions only from them.
  • All A are B + All B are C gives All A are C. All A are B + No B is C gives No A is C.
  • Some A are B + All B are C gives Some A are C. Two 'Some' statements, or two 'No' statements, give no conclusion.
  • 'No' and 'Some' statements are reversible (No A is B = No B is A; Some A are B = Some B are A). 'All A are B' does not reverse to 'All B are A'.
  • Draw the Venn diagram in the loosest way that satisfies the statements; a conclusion follows only if it is true in every possible diagram.
  • 'Some A are B' does not follow from 'All A are B' alone unless it is stated that A exists; treat only definite relations as following.
  • No A is B + All C are B gives No A is C (anything inside B is outside A).
