Shortcuts & formulas

  • In a row facing north, the sitters' left is the left of your page, and right is right.
  • Facing the centre in a circle: a person's right is the anticlockwise side and left is the clockwise side. Facing outside, it is the opposite.
  • In a circle of n people (n even), the person opposite you is n/2 seats away.
  • Start with the most definite clues (extreme ends, 'immediately', 'opposite') to fix people first, then place the rest.
  • Two people with 'exactly k between them' in a row are k + 1 seats apart.
  • In a circle, 'between' questions need the shorter side: distance d gives min(d, n - d) - 1 people between.
  • Draw the seats first (boxes or a circle) and write fixed names in as you read each clue.
