Shortcuts & formulas

  • Average = Sum of observations ÷ Number of observations, so Sum = Average × Number.
  • Average of first n natural numbers = (n+1)/2; of first n odd numbers = n; of first n even numbers = n+1.
  • Average of an arithmetic progression (consecutive numbers, equally spaced) = (first + last)/2 = the middle term.
  • Weighted average = (n1·a1 + n2·a2 + ...) ÷ (n1 + n2 + ...).
  • If a member is replaced and the average changes by d for n members, the difference between new and old member = n × d.
  • Average speed over equal distances = 2xy/(x+y) for two speeds; always total distance ÷ total time, never the mean of speeds.
  • If every number is multiplied by m and increased by c, the average becomes m × average + c.
  • A wrong value corrected later: new sum = old sum − wrong + correct; divide by the same n.

  2. B5 years
  3. C8 years
  4. D15 years
Show answer & solution

Answer: A. 10 years

Solution

Total age five years ago = 5 × 30 = 150 Total age now (same five) = 150 + 5 × 5 = 175 New total = 5 × 33 = 165 Newcomer − leaver = 165 − 175 = −10 So the newcomer is 10 years younger. Answer: 10 years

Q39.

In an examination, the average mark of the students who passed is 39 and of those who failed is 15. If the average of all 100 students is 33, how many students passed?

  1. A60
  2. B70
  3. C80
  4. D75
Show answer & solution

Answer: D. 75

Solution

Let x students pass. 39x + 15(100 − x) = 33 × 100 39x + 1,500 − 15x = 3,300 24x = 1,800, x = 75 Answer: 75

Shortcut: Alligation: (33 − 15) : (39 − 33) = 18 : 6 = 3 : 1, so 3/4 of 100 = 75 passed.

  1. A50
  2. B48
  3. C52
  4. D54
Show answer & solution

Answer: C. 52

Solution

Let the average after 19 innings be x. 19x + 90 = 20(x + 2) 19x + 90 = 20x + 40 x = 50 New average = 52 Answer: 52

Shortcut: New average = 90 − 20 × 2 + ... : score − (innings × rise) = 90 − 40 = 50 is the old average, so new = 52.
