Shortcuts & formulas

  • A pipe that fills a tank in n hours fills 1/n of the tank in one hour; an outlet that empties it in n hours removes 1/n per hour.
  • Net rate = sum of inlet rates - sum of outlet rates. Time to fill = 1 / net rate.
  • Two inlets together: (x * y) / (x + y). Inlet x and outlet y: (x * y) / (y - x), valid only when y > x.
  • A leak: if a pipe fills in x hours and takes y hours with the leak, the leak empties a full tank in (x * y) / (y - x) hours.
  • Take the tank capacity as the LCM of the times; each pipe's rate is then an integer number of units per hour or minute.
  • If pipes are opened or closed midway, find the part filled in each stage and subtract it from 1 for the next stage.
  • For alternate-minute or alternate-hour operation, find the net work in one full cycle, then check the last partial cycle carefully.
