Shortcuts & formulas

  • If A does a job in n days, A's one-day work = 1/n. Add one-day work rates to combine workers.
  • Two workers: together time = (x * y) / (x + y). Three or more: add reciprocals.
  • Total work = LCM of the days taken. Then each person's efficiency = LCM / days (units per day).
  • Efficiency and time are inversely proportional: if A is twice as efficient as B, A takes half the time.
  • Man-days: M1 x D1 x H1 / W1 = M2 x D2 x H2 / W2 (work is proportional to men x days x hours).
  • Wages are divided in the ratio of work done (rate x days worked), not in the ratio of days taken.
  • If A leaves or joins midway, find the work done so far, then divide the remaining work by the new combined rate.

Q44.

B takes 6 days more than A to do a work alone. Together they finish it in 4 days. In how many days can B alone do the work?

  1. A8 days
  2. B12 days
  3. C10 days
  4. D9 days
Show answer & solution

Answer: B. 12 days

Solution

Let A take x days, B takes (x + 6) 1/x + 1/(x + 6) = 1/4 4(2x + 6) = x(x + 6) x^2 - 2x - 24 = 0, so (x - 6)(x + 4) = 0, x = 6 A = 6 days, B = 12 days Answer: 12 days

Q45.

A alone can do a job in 20 days and B alone in 30 days. With C's help the three complete it in 8 days and are paid ₹1,200. What is C's share?

  1. A₹300
  2. B₹600
  3. C₹400
  4. D₹500
Show answer & solution

Answer: C. ₹400

Solution

A + B = 1/20 + 1/30 = 1/12; all three = 1/8 C = 1/8 - 1/12 = 1/24 Work done in 8 days: A = 2/5, B = 4/15, C = 1/3 = 6/15 : 4/15 : 5/15 C's share = 5/15 of 1,200 = ₹400 Answer: ₹400
