Shortcuts & formulas

  • Alligation rule: Quantity of cheaper : Quantity of dearer = (Dearer price − Mean price) : (Mean price − Cheaper price).
  • Mean price of a mixture = (Total cost) ÷ (Total quantity).
  • Same rule works for concentrations: 20% and 50% solutions mixed to get 35% need (50−35):(35−20) = 1:1.
  • Replacement: if a vessel of capacity V has x removed and replaced by water n times, milk left = V × (1 − x/V)^n.
  • Water has price 0 and pure milk has concentration 100%, so adding water is an alligation with 0.
  • Profit % on a mixture = (SP − mean cost) ÷ mean cost × 100.
  • Ratio of milk : water = a : b means milk is a/(a+b) of the total.
  • To change a concentration by adding the pure component, set up: amount of component ÷ new total = required fraction.

Take 6 litres of mixture = 5 litres milk + 1 litre water. Cost = 5 × 48 = ₹240 Selling price = 6 × 54 = ₹324 Profit = 324 − 240 = ₹84 Profit % = 84/240 × 100 = 35% Answer: 35%

Q40.

A can contains milk and water in the ratio 7 : 5. When 9 litres of the mixture is drawn out and replaced by water, the ratio becomes 7 : 9. What is the capacity of the can?

  1. A24 litres
  2. B42 litres
  3. C36 litres
  4. D48 litres
Show answer & solution

Answer: C. 36 litres

Solution

Let the capacity be T litres. Milk = 7T/12 initially. Milk removed = 9 × 7/12, so milk left = 7(T − 9)/12. New ratio 7 : 9 means milk is 7/16 of T (T is unchanged). 7(T − 9)/12 = 7T/16 16(T − 9) = 12T, 4T = 144, T = 36 Check: milk 21 → 15.75, water 15 → 11.25 + 9 = 20.25, ratio 15.75 : 20.25 = 7 : 9. Answer: 36 litres

Show answer & solution

Answer: D. 7:7:6

Solution

Equal amounts of ₹20 and ₹40 behave like one variety with mean price (20 + 40)/2 = ₹30 per kg. Alligation of ₹30 and ₹50 for mean ₹36: (₹30 group) : (₹50) = (50 − 36) : (36 − 30) = 14 : 6 = 7 : 3 Split the 7 equally between ₹20 and ₹40: 3.5 : 3.5 : 3 = 7 : 7 : 6 Check: (7 × 20 + 7 × 40 + 6 × 50)/20 = 720/20 = ₹36. Answer: 7:7:6
